Day 15 - Lighting Candles

I was thinking ….. in an ever increasingly dark and chaotic world it is so easy to become indifferent and cynical to the plight of others.

We may not be able to resolve everyone’s problems or replace all the hatred in people’s hearts with feelings of tenderness. But what we can do is keep ‘lighting candles’. Each act of kindness we do for a stranger, family member or a friend is like lighting candles; especially when we do it in response to someone being unkind to us.

Light has a tendency to make us feel safe and peaceful; and will always keep the darkness away.

Today’s 'lighted candles' included:

1 x Gave money to a street beggar
1 x Let someone know I care about them
1 x Gave cash to a charity
1 x Paid for a friend’s dinner
2 x Proactively ‘gave-way’ to a pedestrian
9 x Proactively ‘gave-way’ to another driver
2 x Voluntary work in the community
Sub total: 17
Running total: 221

Target: 3000+ random acts of kindness in 12 months

Commenced 30th November 2011

Motivation for ‘’My Ten-a-day’

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”

The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realise there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, “I made a difference for that one.”
